Survey: The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization
Pope Francis has announced an Extraordinary Synod of Bishops, which is a meeting of bishops from around the world gathered to discuss a particular theme or message. The topic for this Synod in October 2014 in Rome is—Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelization.
As the preparatory document outlines, Pope Francis has asked the bishops of the world to address pastoral challenges to the family in a focused way. In order to consult widely, the Holy Father is seeking input from parishes and individuals through a questionnaire regarding family and the Church.
The survey contains 39 questions on 9 topic areas that touch on themes such as contraception, same-sex unions, cohabitation by un-wed couples, marriage and divorce, etc. The questions also look at how Catholic teaching on the value of the family has been received and understood, and explore the openness of married couples to life and the Sacraments of the Church.
Bishop Boyea has asked all pastors in the Diocese of Lansing to provide input by consulting their staff, their Parish Pastoral Council and any members of their parish communities who might have input. Before responding, you are invited to reflect on the Gospel truth about family and marriage, as included in the preparatory document or as further illustrated in theCatechism of the Catholic Church(nos, 1601-1658; nos 2331-2391). You are invited to read the questionnaire from the Vatican and provide feedback to any or all of the questions. You are not required to answer all of the questions in order to have your answers included. The deadline for responding to this survey is December 3. Our parish responses to this survey will be provided to the Diocese for inclusion in the Diocese of Lansing response to the United States Council of Catholic Bishops, for input to the Vatican for consideration by the Synod of Bishops in October 2014.
